Know More About NLP

Sunday Feb 7, 2010

Neuro-Linguistic Programming, or NLP, is a method of psychotherapy that works to identify the underlying cause of all manner of mental disorders and change the way the patient responds to them. By finding out the root cause, the NLP practitioner can help change the way the patient perceives that root cause. Because NLP recognizes most mental disorders are created by the patient’s own mind, it seeks to change the signals sent from the subconscious mind to the conscious mind that cause people to react to the trigger in a negative way.

The trigger of the disorder is almost always a past experience that the patient may not even recall. It may be something that has developed over time that is rooted in a childhood experience from before the patient was old enough to remember. For this reason, NLP is especially effective. Instead of merely trying to treat the symptoms, NLP uncovers the exact trigger and identifies why the patient is reacting to that trigger in a negative way.

NLP refers to this trigger as a program, much like that of a software program on a computer. These programs are created by the brain as a way to help filter the vast amount of data the brain receives at any given moment. This data comes at the brain from all five senses. Sights, sounds, smells, tastes and physical sensations like touch bombard the brain with information and it needs to sort all of this information. The programs the brain creates are formed largely on assumptions made based on beliefs, values and past experiences. It can be explained like this: Factor A (a sight) plus Factor B (a sound) equals Factor C (the outcome). The problem with that is Factor C is not always going to happen and reacting on that assumption – which, for all intents and purposes is the program – may not always be appropriate.

For example, if you have a phobia, let’s say a phobia of public places, it is possible that you a bad experience outside of the home when you were a child, or there was some event – possible even an event in a movie or on the news – that programmed your brain to believe that Factor A (you) plus Factor B (the world outside your home) equals Factor C (something bad with happen to you when you go outside).

By working with an NLP practitioner, you can change the way your mind perceived the trigger by changing the program that causes that perception. Instead of feeling frightened or angry about a particular trigger, NLP works to change that to something positive.
