How to deal with NLP

Tuesday Feb 9, 2010

Neuro-Linguistic Programming (NLP) has been around since the early 1970s but was never really accepted by mainstream psychotherapy as there seemed to be little evidence to back up its philosophies. While little has changed in that regard, more and more, NLP is gaining popularity in the boardrooms and offices of today’s high-powered business executives. The reason for this is obvious. Business is a tough game and it’s incredibly competitive. A professional needs to take advantage of anything they can – and NLP teaches them exactly how to do that.

Every one of us has been programmed with certain subconscious programs constantly running in the background of our conscious thought. These programs are formed by our beliefs and our experiences and they are almost always negative. These programs tell us we can’t. They tell us we shouldn’t try. They tell us that we’re not good enough. These programs stand in our way of achieving our true potential and hold us back from pursuing opportunities that may well be within our grasp. NLP helps change these programs and remove the things standing in the way of real success.

Beyond helping open our eyes to our true potential, NLP helps us foster a more positive self image. With a more positive self image we are more confident and self assured. The benefit of this, of course, is that we are more willing to take risks and are more able to convince others we are worth taking a risk on.

NLP also teaches how to more efficiently communicate with others. By teaching us how to read other people we are able to tell if they are hearing our words and body language the way we are intending it. NLP also arms us with the ability adapt our speech and our body language so we can be more persuasive and more easily understood. With this new found adaptability, if we are getting a negative reaction in a particular situation, we can adjust out behavior to achieve a more positive understanding.

For all of those reasons, NLP can be an invaluable tool for those in the highly competitive world of business. One of the fundamentals of NLP methodology is the ability to adjust our body language, tone of voice and posture to match that of the person we are talking to. By making these adjustments, the other person feels you are more relatable – there is a connection formed. Imagine how useful that would be in a business meeting!

For the business professional, the application of NLP is an essential tool that can be used to advance faster and get that promotion or close that deal you’ve been striving for.
