Getting Around Port La Savina Formentera

Thursday Feb 11, 2010

Formentera’s port of La Savina is a hub of activity in the summer months, with tourists arriving from all over Europe. Many are coming from Ibiza as this is the nearest port. Since there is no airport on the island everyone must arrive and leave by boat. Some visitors choose to make it their base from which to explore the island, and Hotel Savina Formentera is just one of the many options available.

Some people like La Savina not only for its marina, but also its proximity to two saltwater lagoons. Hostal La Savina is a popular choice amongst such visitors, and it is known for its warm atmosphere. The accommodation is pretty basic, but new sunshades and blinds have recently been installed, and satellite TV, hairdryer, air-conditioning, and fridge come as standard with the rooms, and they all have balconies. The most convenient thing is that you can walk here from the ferry terminal.

Estany des Peix and Estany Pudent are just a short walk from the the port of La Savina. These natural saltwater lagoons have pathways running around them, and the wetlands are rich nature reserves. You can see all manner of birds here, and during the summer months there are even flamingos. One of the problems with the lagoons is that Estany Pudent can get quite smelly during the summer when its sulphur reserves bubble up.

When you step off the ferry you will see that there is a Tourist Information Office. The staff are very friendly here, and I would recommend popping in. They will be able to give you advice on hiring some transport and the best routes to take to explore the island. If you are just on Formentera for a day then the tourist information office will be able to direct you to the beaches of Es Trucadors which are just 20 minutes by bicycle. As you cycle there you will also be able to see Es Cavall d’en Borras.

The port of La Savina also has some cultural points of interest, including the old prisoner of was camp Es Campament. Hundreds were held here during the Spanish Civil War, and the area has an eerie feeling about it.

La Savina Formentera is the island’s port and you can see more about it if you go to this site. It’s pretty useful http://hubpages.com/hub/Savina-Formentera
