Five Tips For Buying a Range Hood

Sunday Feb 7, 2010

Cooking on a range produces a lot of smoke and odors. If you want to prevent these from circulating around the kitchen and home then the best way is to install a range hood. If you decide to go ahead and buy one of these there a number of issues to think about beforehand. The following is a list of pointers to be aware of.

Fan:

When buying a range hood the fan is one of the most important factors to consider. You have the choice between a rotary fan and a barrel shaped fan. The barrel shaped variety is usually able to shift more air and is also more quieter. If you are on a budget, however, the rotary fan is the cheaper option which is still a highly effective piece of equipment. Being able to change the speed of the fan is important.

CFM:

One of the next points to think about is the CFM rating of the hood. CFM, or cubic feet per minute refers to the amount of air that the hood can move per minute. A higher rating, which is the most desirable, means it can move a greater amount of air and provide better ventilation within the kitchen.

Lights:

I would advise purchasing a hood with lighting. This provides another sources of lighting over the cooker and allows you to see what you are doing better. There are usually one or two bulbs in most hoods. The bulbs can also be conventional incandescent types or halogen.

Size:

One of the important things you need to think about is the size of the hood. To work effectively it needs to be as wide as the cooking surface or range. If not, you will find that it will not remove the odors and fumes, from the cooking, as effectively. Prior to going out and making a purchase, measure the size of the range.

Venting:

The next factor is the exhaust system which involves the venting system away from the hood. Some hoods use ducts which channel the extracted air away and out through a vent in an external wall. The other type is the ventless or ductless type which uses filters to clean the air. The cleaned air, after it has passed through the filters, is then recirculated into the kitchen. Some model use a combination of the two methods.

These are some of the points to consider when buying a new range hood. Using them when you decide to purchase a new hood will help you get a model which is both suitable and which works effectively and efficiently.
