Cat Litter Boxes That Cats Love To Use
Posted by Shane McConnell | Under Home & Family Tuesday Feb 2, 2010All cats can be finicky at times and just like recalcitrant two years old, they seem to try to do the exact opposite of what is desired or requested. This seems to be a particularly sticky wicket when it comes to cat litter boxes. A box that was perfectly fine and in daily use by a favorite feline can suddenly turn into the cat’s versions of a torture chamber, a place to be avoided at all costs. There fortunately are a number of steps that can be taken to help change this perception.
Veterinarians are often asked for the reasons why a cat suddenly stops using its box. Hands down, the first answer is a question for the owner about the cleaning and maintenance of the litter box. It should not come as a surprise, yet it does for some owners, that a cat does not want to use a nasty smelly cat box. Cats by their very nature are clean and if their box is let go, litter not changed and smells wafting throughout the room, they will just go find a nicer area to use.
Other things may also put pets off of their cat litter boxes. In cases where there are several cats, a more dominant cat may simply declare a box off limits for the others. In this case, a simple solution is to have one or more boxes per cat and locate them in different parts of the house. Some cats prefer only certain types of litter or like a box that is covered for that extra little bit of privacy.
Good litter box maintenance is the way to win your cat’s heart and preserve your furnishings and carpeting. Some households favor automatic boxes as they are real times savers and eliminate much of the dirty work, but they can be too expensive for many cat lovers. Regular cat litter boxes work just fine with the selection of the proper litter and regular cleaning. In fact, some cats seem to prefer the old school style.
Crystal cat litters, while sometimes a bit more expensive than the clay variety, can pay off in dividends when it comes to keeping odors at bay. The crystal pellets actually wick the liquid away and absorb it. This keeps the box smelling fresh longer and makes for a happy cat and owner.
Clumping cat litter can be notorious for its smell. Think about changing over to cat litter crystals to keep your home smelling fresh and clean.
